Below are some frequently asked questions regarding school pets.

What are the benefits of having a school pet?

• A calming effect on pupils, particularly those with behavioural, emotional or learning difficulties.

• Encouraging expression and participation.

• Promotes a sense of responsibility.

• Stress relief for children (and staff!).

• Motivating pupils to think and to learn as most children have a high level of natural interest in animals.

• Teaching children to nurture and respect life.

• Help children build confidence in reading.

How will school plan for this?

• A full risk assessment and policy has been written.  

• Consent has been sought from parents of children who will come into contact with the animals.

• Children will not be unsupervised with any animal and contact will be carefully planned.

• When not enjoying classrooms, Luna will be in the office with Mrs Taylor and Mrs Welbourn whilst class pets will be housed in their respective classrooms.

What about allergies?

• All rooms and corridors are thoroughly hoovered at the end of every day to remove pet hair, along with all surfaces wiped and cleaned with anti-bacterial spray.
